Ep 1: Half Princess
When I tell people about my lifestyle -- vegan, thrifter, no car -- they think I’m a superhero or I’m making big sacrifices.
But I’m not. I never feel that way.
Quite the opposite.
I’m a half hippie, half princess.
Listen here
There’s a running joke that I’m a half princess because I get all the clothes at the secondhand shop but I don’t want to go camping.
Being a half hippy doesn’t mean you can’t also be a princess.
When it comes to clothes, furniture, shoes, everything… luxury is ok.
As a half hippy/half princess, I like to invest and buy things that last a long time. My clothes and shoes, for example, are good quality and well made so they don’t end up in a landfill in a year.
Half Princess Tips
When you go thrifting, expect to find good things. #mindset
Shop fair trade so the people who make your things are paid a living wage
Invest in good quality items that last a long time. No fast fashion
Use a hot water bottle to warm the foot of your bed at night instead of running a heater. It’s so cozy!
Try Uber Green (or the green version of whatever rideshare app you use)
When you need a new device, look for a refurbished one. They’ve been repaired and they usually include a warranty
Ultimate comfort
There’s no insulation in apartment buildings in Portugal (much like castles in the time of princesses). But I like to be warm because I’m a princess, so I use a hot water bottle as a foot warmer in bed.
I don’t run a heater all night. That’s expensive and wasteful.
Nope, no heater. Just my foot warmer and a fluffy duvet and I feel like a princess.
Am I optimistic?
As a ½ hippie ½ princess, I see a lot of princesses who live like they have 3-4 planets but we only have this one.
And when people think I’m giving up so much, it doesn’t make me optimistic because it really isn’t difficult to live this way. I never feel like I’m sacrificing anything for this lifestyle. I’m so happy and I almost always feel like a princess.
That’s why I wanted to talk about this, even though it’s silly. I wanted to show people that it’s not hard to be sustainable.
You can be a ½ princess with gorgeous clothes, warm feet, a beautiful house, luxury driver, and still reduce your impact on the planet.
