Ep. 13: Buddhist Wisdom
A lot of hippies gravitate towards Buddhism so I thought it would be fun to talk with one of my favorite people, a Buddhist student and teacher. She is also a prison chaplain, author, celebrant (she officiates weddings and funerals), the director of Tarastone Retreat center, and someone who simply glows with love and light.
Welcome Sherab Chödrön.
In this episode, we talk about Buddhism and what it means. We talk about grief, attachment, cultural appropriation, my resistance to the word play, and what Buddhism can tell us about climate change.
Listen now
I found Buddhism when I was seeking comfort after losing a pet. We talked about my struggle with attachment and how my attachment to the pets isn’t really doing any of us a favor.
"Our attachments don't make us more loving."
In regards to suffering, she said
"If we have the expectation that we're going to be happy and joyful all the time, that's not what's going to happen and that's not our job here."
Tips
Play more.
Be curious.
“Our attachments don’t make us more loving.”
Quiet is very important.
Is Sherab optimistic?
The planet will shake us off and be perfectly fine. We humans will probably make things more comfortable for ourselves but the planet will survive.
